Mr. Chen and his wife of Bade township, Taoyuan County, suffer from speech and hearing impairments and have financial problems as well. In addition, their daughter entered a persistent vegetative state and became bedridden after sustaining severe injuries in a car accident, forcing the family into even more miserable circumstances. Recently, after visiting the Chens and learning of their problems, local members of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association placed the Chen family on their list of long-term financial aid recipients, offering them monthly allowances and providing them with additional funds and assistance when necessary. These actions expressed the brotherly feelings for humanity that arise from spiritual practice.
On July 5, 2002, fellow initiates from the Taoyuan Center heard that the phlegm removal apparatus that the Chens' daughter had been using was malfunctioning and a new one was needed. Thus, the next day, the initiates purchased a new device, and brother Lu, who had been visiting the Chens regularly, delivered it to them. After brother Lu had installed the new instrument and made sure that it was working smoothly, he prepared to leave. Just then, Mr. Chen excitedly pointed at Master's name on the back of brother Lu's uniform, indicating that he knew Master. (Although brother Lu visits the Chens every month, this was the first time he had come in his Taoyuan Center guard's uniform.) Mr. Chen then turned round, opened a cupboard and took out a sample booklet. Pointing at Master's photo on the cover and opening the booklet, he told brother Lu that he had already read it. Seeing Mr. Chen radiant with smiles while holding Master's booklet, brother Lu could not help wanting to take a photo of him, and said later that he had never before seen Mr. Chen laugh so heartily, as though he were a child. This again proved the miraculous power of Master's name. Brother Lu said he will remember to wear his guard's uniform when he visits the Chen family in the future!
During this visit, brother Lu needed to stay by Miss Chen's sickbed for a longer period than usual in order to instruct Mr. Chen in using the instrument. This gave the brother a chance to share and feel the girl's suffering, and learn to perceive others' feelings with a sympathetic heart - something that cannot be learned by merely listening and talking. He sincerely wishes Miss Chen a quick recovery, while cherishing and feeling more grateful for everything he has.
