John Robbins was born into one of the wealthiest families in America. His father Irving Robbins was a founder and chief executive of Baskin and Robbins, the largest ice-cream company in the world. He was the only son in the family and was groomed and prepared for the task of someday taking over and running the family business. However when he grew up, he decided to give up this opulent lifestyle and follow his higher purpose. It was a dream of respecting and living in harmony with all life forms, a dream of people living in accord with the laws of Creation and a dream of a society that chooses a wise and compassionate way of living. Thereafter, John Robbins devoted his life to inspiring people to adopt a vegetarian diet that would lead to healthier individuals and a healthier planet. He established a non-profit organization, “EarthSave,” and wrote several books on a natural way of living, including the influential and popular book: ‘Diet for a New America’, which was the first fully researched book on vegetarianism, nutrition and lives of animals. “At the present time, when most
of us sit down to eat, we aren’t very aware of how our food choices
affect the world. We don’t realize that in every Big Mac there is
a piece of the tropical rainforests, and with every billion burgers sold
another hundred species become extinct. We don’t realize that in
the sizzle of our steaks there is the suffering of animals, the mining
of our topsoil, the slashing of our forests, the harming of our economy,
and the eroding of our health. We don’t hear in the sizzle the cry
of the hungry millions who might otherwise be fed. We don’t see
the toxic poisons accumulating in the food chains, poisoning our children
and our earth for generations to come.” (Diet for a New America)
The words and life of John Robbins have prompted many people around the
world to follow a lifestyle with higher vision and deeper compassion.
