Celebrating Buddha’s Birthday
By Kathmandu News Group (Originally in English)
[Kathmandu] On May 20, Golden Year 5 (2008), Shakyamni Buddha’s 2552nd birthday was celebrated worldwide. For this occasion, thousands of devotees came to Swoyambhu Nath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, to pay their respect to this great enlightened Master. Also known as the Monkey Temple, Swoyambhu Nath Temple is regarded as one of the holiest places of worship for Buddhists. The Nepalese fellow initiates took this opportunity to distribute Master’s SOS global warming flyer and sample booklet at the temple. Many people received the precious information with a smile and gratitude. Tourists and the locals took the posters promoting vegetarianism that the initiates had made and put up on the display boards. Some said that they were already vegetarians and really appreciated the initiates’ work. It was an uplifting experience for the fellow initiates to see people walking home with Master’s flyer in their hands and saying “Be a hero, be a vegetarian!”
