On
October 18, Golden Year 5 (2008), on behalf of Supreme Master Ching Hai,
the Hawaii Center presented the Shining World Compassion Award to a seventh-grade
student Isaiah Chong. Isaiah has been collecting signatures to get a law
passed to hold drivers responsible for accidents involving animals. A
few months ago, his cat, Ryan, was hit by a speeding car in front of his
home. The neighbors yelled at the driver to stop, but the motorist continued
on. Fortunately, after seeing the veterinarian, Ryan is on the way to
recovery.
Isaiah was distressed. Even though he called the police, he was told that the driver didn’t break any law. Therefore, Isaiah was determined to push through the legislature to make it a crime if people accidentally hit an animal and drive away. He thinks people should at least get out of the car, call the police, offer first aid or find the owners. He does not want any animal to go through this devastating experience. Ms. Kymberly Pine, State Representative, agreed and commended, “How we’re going to put that in law is a little bit more difficult but we’re going to try our best to meet his dream of passing something like this.”

Isaiah with the Shining World Compassion Award, together with Master’s
publications and a check of US$500. Isaiah’s mother was extremely
touched and her eyes were filled with tears when she saw the beautiful
plaque. Isaiah is especially grateful for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s
recognition. He kept thanking Her and is planning to use the money for
his new mission.
