Last
December, torrential downpours lasting two weeks devastated the Venezuelan capital
of Caracas and coastal areas along the Caribbean Sea, causing heavy mud slides
and washing down huge boulders in torrents of water from the mountains. This
worst natural disaster of the century in Venezuela destroyed large numbers of
houses and infrastructures, and left tens of thousands of casualties and hundreds
of thousands of people homeless. Upon hearing this news, the all-compassionate
Supreme Master Ching Hai immediately instructed that a contribution of US$30,000
be made through the American Red Cross for disaster relief in Venezuela.
